|Frequently Asked Questions for Printed House Keys|
Q: What is a printed key?
A: A printed key (also called painted key or sublimated key) is a blank key with both sides printed through dye sublimation. The printing is sharp and glossy, and very durable.
Here are some sample photos of printed keys:
Q: How are printed keys manufactured?
A: The production technique for printed keys is called dye sublimation. Firstly, we order brass key blanks from a key blank factory. We paint them all in white with a special lacquer to be ready for sublimation. Meanwhile, we print out the colorful designs onto a special kind of transfer medium. The printed transfer medium is put on the heating plate of a heat transfer machine. Our workers put the white painted key blanks one by one onto the transfer medium, aligning each key to each printed design correctly. Then, the transfer medium together with the keys are pressed and heated to a preset temperature. After one to two minutes of heating, the printed designs on the transfer medium are transferred to the surface of the keys. By now, only one side is printed. Then, we carry out the same process for the other side. After both sides are printed, we inspect the quality, picking out defective ones and pack the good ones.
Q: What is the price of each printed key?
A: We do not have a fixed unit price. The prices of printed keys depend on the key styles, shapes, sizes and order quantities. But we will surely offer our best prices. Please send us an inquiry with your detailed requirements and your expected order quantity.
Q: What does key style mean?
A: Key styles are also known as keyways or key profiles and are indicated by such codes as KW1, SC1, KW10, WR5, LW4, UL050, TE2 etc. These are actually codes of famous lock companies, for instance, KW stands for Kwikset and LW stands for Lockwood. Key styles are mainly differentiated through the grooves on the key shank, or the length of the working part of the key. Here are a drawing of some typical keyways for your information:
Q: What kind of pictures can be printed onto the keys?
A: Virtually, any kind of images can be printed. However, to obtain the best printing result, we would recommend colorful images with a high resolution. Our printing method is high-temperature sublimation. This printing technique does not work well with black and white colors, or designs with large area of uniform colors. Also, as the keys are manually placed one by one onto the transfer medium, slight misplacement will cause slight misalignment of the printing. We do not accept orders requiring strict alignment. Please check and confirm samples before ordering.
Q: Can I send you my own pictures or designs to print?
A: Sure. We accept custom orders and can print any kind of pictures or designs sent to us by customers. Please make sure your pictures are of a high-resolution to obtain good printing result. File formats can be jpg, pdf, eps, cdr, ai etc. Alternatively, you may choose from our ready designs. We have hundreds of attractive designs in various styles.
Q: Can I order a custom-made special key shape?
A: Yes, but only when your total order quantity exceeds 10,000 keys. Otherwise, it might be too costly because a speical shape requires molding and the mold costs around US$400 for each shape. Sometimes when we have special shape key blanks in stock, we can also accept smaller orders like 1000 keys or 2000 keys.
Q: How can I get samples of printed keys?
A: If you just want to get a few random samples, we can offer to send you several printed key samples, free of charge. All you have to pay is the shipping cost. However, if you want to see samples of your own design, you’ll need to pay a sampling cost of US$50 and a mold cost (US$300) if you’re ordering a key style or shape that we do not have a ready mold. We have ready molds for KW1, SC1, UL050, and UL054 keys of the regular size and shape, and big-head KW1 and SC1 keys in decagonal shape. Please inquire if we have ready mold of the key style you want to order.
Q: Why is the printing inside the key groove slightly blurred?
A: Yes, this is an inevitable problem but we believe it is not a big issue. As the heating plate and the key blanks are flat, when the transfer medium and keys are pressed and heated, the transfer medium can not directly contact the bottom of the key grooves. This is the reason why the printing inside the grooves are blurred.
Q: Do I get a refund for the mold cost or sampling cost if I place an order after the sampling?
A: Yes, we will refund the mold cost and sampling cost you have paid as long as your order quantity meets our refund policy. For sampling of printed keys with ready molds, the sampling fee of US$50 will be refunded if your order quantity is 5000 keys or more. The mold cost of US$300 will be refunded when your accumulated order quantity reaches 20,000 keys. Of course, the total of 20,000 keys can be divided into multiple designs and consecutive orders.
Q: If I order 1000 keys, how many designs can I get?
A: If you just select from our ready designs, you can select 10 designs at the most. That is, MOQ is 100 keys per design. If you provide your own design(s), MOQ is 200 keys per design.
Q: How long does it take to make samples?
A: Sampling of printed keys with ready stock key blanks only takes a few days. Normally we can send you samples in 7 days upon confirmation of design(s). However, it will take much longer time if a new mold is needed. The molding for a new key blank takes approximately two weeks. So, printed samples will be ready in 20 days.
Q: How long does the production take?
A: After confirmation of samples, production will take 10 to 30 days depending on the total quantity and number of designs.
Q: How are the printed keys packed?
A: Normally we will pack each key into a poly bag and 50 or 100 keys in a bigger poly bag. Each carton will contain 600 to 1200 keys depending on different key types and sizes. If a customer requires a special packing style, for example, with a custom printed backing card, we can arrange that by charging an additional packing cost.
Q: How are the keys shipped to my address?
A: For order quantities of less than 10,000 keys, we would recommend courier, such as DHL, FedEx, EMS, TNT, SF-Express etc, which will take less than 10 days to arrive depending on the remoteness of your address. For large order quantities exceeding 10,000 keys, sea shipping will save a lot of cost. All shipping costs are assumed by customer. We will help to choose a cost-effective shipping method depending on your requirement.
